The Wessex Surf Club is the oldest running surf club in the UK and has members who live across the Wessex area, particularly in Bournemouth and Poole in Dorset.
URGENT NEWS REGARDING THE FUTURE OF SURFING IN BOURNEMOUTH
As many of you will be aware, there is currently an ongoing project being undertaken by Bournemouth Borough Council to renourish the local beaches with sand. This work was started last winter with sections of Southbourne having been completed. The upshot of this has been that the angle of the beach at Southbourne is now so steep that the rolling waves needed for surfing have been replaced by a large breakwater just on the shoreline. As if this wasn't bad enough, the sand that they've replenished the beach with is full of large sharp stones, which have been embedded to slow the erosion of the beach. Surfing at Southbourne has all but come to an end since this has happened. Now the Council is set to do the same to the rest of the beaches along the Bournemouth coast which could well see surfing come to an end in the area.
